What is indian head Massage?
Indian Head Massage, also known as Champi, Champissage and Shiro-Abhyanga, is thought to have been in existence for over five thousand years.
It is part of the system of medicine known as Ayurveda (a Sanskrit word meaning "Science of Life"). Ayurveda is a complete health system which originated in India, incorporating diet, exercise, yoga, meditation, herbal remedies and massage.
Indian Head Massage also has its influences from the style of massage commonly practised by Indian women on family and friends as part of every day life and passed down through families from mother and grand mother to daughter.
The techniques now known as Indian head Massage were formalised and introduced to the west by Mr Narendra Mehta. Mr Mehta researched, documented and trained in the many types of head massage available in India and introduced what we now know as Indian Head Massage to the UK in the 1980s. The Massage is now taught by many different schools, each of which has developed their own interpretation and techniques.
A typical treatment is carried out with the receiver sitting upright on a low backed chair. The techniques can be applied either through the clothes or with oils directly on the skin. Please note that the Massage taught by the Academy is 'dry' ie. no oils are used. Techniques are applied to the upper back, shoulders, arms and hands and then working up through the neck, scalp and face.
